The number of established prisons in Kenya is 134 and the current capacity of the prisons is 34,000 but the current capacity is around 53,000. This means that Kenyan prisons are crowded and resources are overstretched. The biggest prison in Kenya IS Kamiti Maximum Prison.

Maximum Prisons in Kenya
Before March 17, 2017, Kenya had 5 maximum prisons. But after a gazette notice published on March 17, 2017, the number of maximum prisons increased . Below we look at the maximum prisons in Kenya
1. Kamiti Maximum Prison
As mentioned above Kamiti Maximum Prison is the largest prison in Kenya. Founded in 1955 and located in Kahawa west, the prison holds around 1800- 2500 prisoners. Prisoners in Kamiti Maximum Prison are majorly sentenced for life imprisonment and most have committed extremely bad crimes.
2. Langata Women Maximum Security Prison
As the largest women Prison, Langata prison holds women who have been sentenced for life imprisonment. It located along Langata road.

3. Nairobi Remand and Allocation Maximum Security Prison
Nairobi Remand and Allocation Maximum Security Prison was upgraded to a maximum prison after the late Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery gazetted that the prison will among the prisons which will undergo the upgrading. Nairobi Remand is located along in Industrial area along Enterprise road.
4. Shimo la Tewa Maximum Security Prison
Criminal who commit offences like murder, terrorism, piracy or drug dealers are jailed at this prison. It is Kenya’s second largest prison and was actually founded in 1953.
5. Manyani Maximum Security Prison
As the second maximum prison in Mombasa, Mantani prison was originally created by the colonial governmenent to hold Mau Mau members. It is located in Taita taveta, inside Tsavo National Park.
6. Nyeri Maximum Security Prison
It is the only maximum prison in Nyeri. Before the gazette notice by Joseph Nkaissery, the prison was known as Kingongo Maximum Security Prison. This prison was upgraded to a maximum prison in 2017. It is located along Nyeri-Kiganjo road.

7. Kisumu Maximum Security Prison
This is another prison which was upgraded to maximum prison. Before the 2017 gazette it was known as Kisumu Main prison. The prison is over populated and holds over 2500 prisoners.
8. Kibos Maximum Security Prison
As the second maximum prison in Nyanza region, the prison is located near Kibos Market.
9. Naivasha Maximum Security Prison
As the third largest maximum prison in Kenya, Naivasha maximum prison is located in Nakuru County.
