Reason Why You Missed On KUCCPS First Placement 2026

Many students and parents are often in disbelief when a candidate with a strong KCSE mean grade fails to secure placement during the first selection by Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS). In most cases, people assume that having an A- or B+ automatically guarantees admission into competitive degree courses such as Medicine, Engineering, Pharmacy, or Nursing. However, KUCCPS placement is not based on the overall mean grade alone.

What many candidates fail to understand is that universities mainly consider weighted cluster points, which are calculated using performance in specific subjects required for a particular course. This means a good overall grade can sometimes hide weaker performance in critical subjects, reducing the final cluster points significantly.

How KUCCPS placement is done

For highly competitive programs such as Medicine and Surgery, universities pay close attention to subjects like:

  • Mathematics
  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • English or Kiswahili

Even a slight drop in one or two of these subjects can greatly affect the final weighted cluster points.

Example of a Student Who Missed Placement

A student scored an overall KCSE mean grade of A- (76 points) with the following results:

  1. Mathematics – A
  2. Physics – A
  3. Chemistry – A-
  4. Biology – A-
  5. English – B
  6. Kiswahili – B
  7. Geography – B+
  8. Art and Design – B+

At first glance, this appears to be an excellent performance. However, after KUCCPS calculated the weighted cluster points for the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB), the student attained 43.214 cluster points.

Unfortunately, universities such as:

  • University of Nairobi
  • Kenyatta University
  • Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology
  • Maseno University

required cut-off points above 44 cluster points for Medicine.

This simply meant the student did not meet the admission threshold despite having an A- mean grade.

Important Lesson for Students

When applying through KUCCPS, students should:

  • Focus on cluster subjects, not just the overall grade
  • Research previous university cut-off points
  • Apply strategically with realistic options
  • Include alternative degree programs during revision

A high mean grade is important, but cluster points eventually determine placement in the most competitive university courses in Kenya.
