KUCCPS Most Competitive Courses in 2026/27 Application

In 2026, as 2025 KCSE candidates apply for university placement through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS), competition is higher that expected. While an A- is considered an excellent grade, many students are often surprised to discover that it is sometimes not enough to secure placement in some of Kenya’s most competitive degree courses.

This happens because of the extremely high demand for certain professional and marketable careers. As more top-performing students apply for the same courses, universities are forced to raise cut-off points, leaving many A- students missing out during the first stage of placement.

Why KUCCPS Courses Are Highly Competitive

Several factors make these courses attract huge numbers of applicants:

  • Strong job market demand
  • High earning potential
  • Prestige associated with the professions
  • Limited training capacity in universities
  • Government preference for critical healthcare and STEM careers

As a result, only students with the very highest cluster points and grades are selected.

KUCCPS 2026 Most Competitive Courses

  1. Medicine and Surgery

Medicine and Surgery remains one of the most competitive courses in Kenya. Due to limited spaces in medical schools and massive demand, many universities admitted mainly students with straight A grades. Most universities demanded a cut-off points of above 44

  1. Nursing

Nursing has become increasingly competitive because of growing local and international demand for nurses. The limited number of slots pushed the cut-off points to above 39 points. Cutting off many students from well known universities.

  1. Clinical Medicine

Clinical Medicine attracted many applicants because of its shorter training period and strong employability prospects in hospitals and health centres. The cut off points ranged between 39 to 41 points, but some went as high as 42 points

  1. Pharmacy

Pharmacy also recorded very high competition, especially in major public universities were the minimum cut off was around 39 points.

  1. Engineering Courses

Fields such as:

  • Civil Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering

continued to attract top KCSE candidates because of their strong career opportunities and professional recognition.

  1. Architecture

Architecture remained highly selective due to limited studio spaces and growing interest in the built environment sector.

  1. Computer Science

Computer Science in well renown universities was so competitive that UON required students to have a cut-off points of 44, following a degree like medicine. This is because  competition is on the rise as more students pursued careers in software development, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and data science.

Final Thoughts

Missing out on a competitive KUCCPS course with an A- does not mean failure. Many students still secure excellent alternatives that lead to successful careers. In many cases, diploma pathways, inter-faculty transfers, or related degree programs later open doors to the same professions.
