Kenya Medical Training Centre contribution to the healthcare provision in Kenya is undoubtedly being felt in all corners of the country. As a public mid-level health training institution, KMTC started in 1927 with four students. Today it has grown tremendously, curving a niche for itself as one of the largest medical training institutions in East and Central Africa and even beyond. It gets international students from Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, Sudan, and Nigeria.

Kenya Medical Training Centre offers tailor-made courses that are in response to society’s increasing health demands. More than 80 percent of the Country’s healthcare workers were trained at the College.

Diploma in Community Health Nursing
Minimum Entry Requirement
a)    KCSE Minimum aggregate C plain with C in English or Kiswahili and Biology or Biological sciences
b)    C- in Chemistry or physical sciences and in any one of following Physics Mathematics
c)     Any Science degree holder from a recognized university (by the academic board) and who demonstrate interests in Nursing training

Applications:
Duly completed application forms are filled by prospective candidates for admission into Courses for each academic year for Regular or Parallel Category. The Regular category have subsidized fee with optional accommodation but no choice for Campus while the parallel category have non subsidized fee, no accommodation option but have option for Campuses in more than twenty nine (29) campuses situated in different parts of the country depending on the courses.

Procedure:
•    Prospective candidates are expected to submit a duly completed application form which can be obtained from the KMTC website, KMTC face book and KMTC campuses across the country.
•    Candidates are advised to attach legible Photostat copies of academic certificates; school leaving certificate and national identity card/birth certificate.
•    Applications must be accompanied by a non-refundable fee of KShs.1, 000 OR US$50 for non-Kenyans in the form of Banker’s Cheque or National bank deposit slip. Application fee does not guarantee admission.
•    Candidates should provide reliable and permanent mailing address with postal codes for any future contact. Those near Nairobi may hand deliver the completed application forms to KMTC Headquarters’ offices.

KMTC Courses Duration

Certificate courses
Certificate courses take two years with the exception of nursing which takes two and a half years. A minimum aggregate of C- with relevant combination of other subjects is a requirement.

Diploma Courses:
KCSE mean grade of C (or equivalent) with relevant combination of other subjects such as English, Kiswahili, Biology, Biological Sciences, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Physical Sciences.

Duration
3 years except Community Health Nursing which lasts 3 ½ years.
Post Basic Diploma courses
Holders of basic diploma in relevant fields and at least a minimum of two years working experience.

Short Courses:
Individuals and groups such as corporate bodies, companies and government ministries interested in any course or courses can make a written request for arrangements to be made.

KMTC Higher Diploma Fee Structure

Fees structure is subject to changes from time to time
Students are advised to pay fees on annual basis to avoid interruption of training
Upon dismissal, fees are not refundable.
NB: Students are advised to make financial arrangements to cover expenses related to Practical attachment; Research etc. details are available from respective faculties upon reporting

Stationary
All stationary is the responsibility of the student.
Students are encouraged to buy their own textbooks, and specific course book lists are usually provided as an admission package to assist in purchasing books.

Medical Equipment
All special medical equipment in each course i.e. Stethoscopes etc are the responsibility of the student

HELB LOANS

1.Available for KMTC students as Afya Elimu Fund that was negotiated by KMTC and FUNZOKenya (Partner with KMTC)

2.There are two Categories: –

  • First Time Applicants – All students who have never applied for HELB LOAN at any time irrespective of the year of study
  • Subsequent Applicants – All students who have at any given time applied for HELB Loan irrespective of whether they benefitted or not

3.Process- Applied after the HELB office puts an advert specifying the category to apply

4.Applications are done on-line or as per guidelines on the advertisement

5.Application forms are downloaded later for appropriate signatories and sent to HELB Loan Office directly by students

6.A List of successful students is sent to the Bursary office for Verification by Principals (an exercise of checking whether students belong to the specified College and their Fee Balances)

7.When successfully verified, payment is done to KMTC Central collection Account and KMTC issues receipt.

8.Bursary Desk officer sends list of successful applicants and copy of receipt to Principals concerned.

9.Principals input the loan in individual student ledgers and inform them e.g. through mounting list of the students on their Notice board.

Note the Following: 

  • There is a lapse of time between the initial list of the beneficiaries and payment which comes with name of those paid for (Verification period).
  • However all students in the initial list must be paid for though amounts may vary depending on the Student fee balances forwarded to HELB office by Principal

TIME TO APLY

Once advert is out. It has deadlines and therefore any difficulties experienced should be communicated to Desk Officer both at College level or HQ and HELB office

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

All Pre-service students of KMTC are eligible provided they follow advertisement guideline Higher National Diploma Students are not eligible. However, HELB Loan is available to Public servants on training and details can be obtained from their website or KMTC Human Resource Manager – Head office.

2.Application forms are later sent thro Bursary office – HQ to Principals for students who had applied to fill (Rahimtulla decides who to sent the forms to)

3.Dully filled forms are send back by student directly to Ismail  Rahimtulla Trust

4.Rahimtulla Trust sends list of successful students to KMTC Director accompanied by a cheque

5.Communication to successful students is send to Principals by Desk Officer HQ

Kenya Medical Training College Homabay Campus was established in 1978 to train Enrolled Community Health Nurses. The first class to be admitted comprised of 12 students. Over the years, the institution has grown to offer three courses: diploma in Community Health Nursing (pre-service), Diploma in Community Health Nursing (In-service) and Diploma in Clinical Medicine (pre-service).

Before the pre-service programmes in Clinical Medicine and Nursing were introduced three years ago, the institution had been conducting an upgrading in-service programme for Enrolled Nurses. The basic training for enrolled nurses was phased out in 2002.

Mode of learning

For nursing department, the students alternate between theory blocks and practical experiences in the clinical areas. At the end of each theory block, pre-service students attend skills lab sessions, where they are taught various practical skills. Then they are subjected to an objectively scored clinical examination (OSCE). The students then go to the clinical areas where they circulate the Maternity Unit, Outpatient department, surgical, medical and pediatric wards.

Clinical Medicine students rotate in all the wards within the District Hospital including the outpatient department and theatre, where they gain various practical skills. Each rotation takes eight weeks. Towards the end of their second year in training, the students are guided to conduct a community diagnosis. After they have successfully conducted the diagnosis, they are ready to proceed to the Rural Health centers for six weeks to gain experiences in rural health care and health center management

KMTC Makueni Campus

Kenya Medical Training College Makueni Campus is situated at Wote town in Makueni County, about 72km from Machakos City and 72 km away from Makindu town along the Nairobi Mombasa high way.

The campus is adjacent to Makueni County Referral Hospital which serves as the practical site for the students.
The Campus occupies the former DC’s Offices and the multipurpose farmers’ centre which were renovated to accommodate the college.

It is situated within Longisa County hospital. The campus has 2.8 hectares of land which is approximately seven acres.

It was conceived in March 2013, as a community initiative and the County government of Bomet. They were given a go-ahead by the KMTC Director and a task force was formed who implement the project. In October 2013, the first class of 50 Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing Diploma students was admitted.

The College admits 2 intakes per year.

Kenya Medical Training College Kakamega Campus

Kenya Medical Training College Kakamega Campus a long history dating back to 1922 when it started training Health Workers who qualified as Medical attendants. The training of enrolled nurses started in 1952 while that of Environmental Health Sciences was inaugurated in 1979. The faculty of Medical Laboratory Technology (now Medical Laboratory Sciences) was introduced in 1981.

The three faculties offered certificate courses until 1994 when Medical Laboratory Sciences started a diploma course, followed by nursing department in 2000. Environmental Health Sciences introduced in-service diploma courses in September 2001. In addition to the three regular progammes, the Nursing faculty started upgrading of enrolled nurses to diploma level in September 2005.

KMTC Kilifi Campus

It started operation in 1987. It was collaboration between the government of Kenya and SIDA. It was offering Certificate in Medical Engineering.

The first class had 18 students who were recruited among the workers in various hospitals in the country. Later in March 2007, the 1st class of KRCHN (Diploma) course was introduced. Presently, there are 3 classes of Medical engineering (Cert) and 3 classes of KRCHN (Diploma).

Kenya Medical Training College Kilifi Campus is situated in Kilifi town, 62km north of Mombasa along the Mombasa-Malindi Highway. It is within the District’s Headquarters and boarders the Kilifi district Hospital at KEMRI (Kenya Medical Research Institute).

How to get an admission at Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC)

Are you wondering how you can get your admission at KMTC this years? Today we have looked at some of the KMTC course requirement that will get you an admission at this college.

KMTC is one of the biggest medical training college in East Africa. Over 22,000 students are enrolled for over 50 medical courses offered in it’s over 41 campuses. Yearly, the college produces more than 6000 graduates to both private and public hospitals. The institution boasts of a highly qualified and experienced teaching and administrative staff.

The college courses, range from certificate to diploma to higher diploma. Every year there is is courses review to ensure the training offered is in line with the needs in the society.

Course requirements and duration

The following are the requirements for all courses offered:-

Certificate courses

KCSE mean grade C- with relevant combination of other subjects is a requirement.

Duration: 2 years with the exclusion of nursing this course takes two and a half years

Diploma Courses:

KCSE mean grade of C (or equivalent) with relevant subjects grouping such as English,

Kiswahili, Biology, Biological Sciences, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Physical

Sciences.

Duration: 3 years excluding Community Health Nursing which lasts 3 ½ years.

Post Basic Diploma courses

Holders of basic diploma in relevant fields and at least two years working experience.

Short Courses:

Individuals and groups such as corporate bodies, companies and government ministries

interested in any course or courses can make a written request for arrangements to be made.

(i) In-Service Courses: for already experienced workforce

Advertisement: 15th November to 15th January

Selection: Between end of February and 15th March.

(ii) Pre-Service Courses:

– Regular category-Government sponsored:

 Advertisement: -Between 1st March and 15th April

Selection – first week of June

– Self-Sponsored Students and Parallel

Advertisement: 1st week of July

Selection: 3rd week of July.

Application Procedure

Applications:

Properly completed application forms are filled by prospective candidates for admission into

Courses for each academic year for Regular or Parallel Category.

Procedure:

– Potential candidates are expected to submit a correctly completed application form which

can be downloaded from the KMTC website, KMTC face book or a hardcopy obtained

from KMTC campuses across the country.

–  Attach photostat copies of academic certificates; school leaving certificate and national

identity card/birth certificate.

– Applications must be accompanied by a non-refundable fee of KShs.2, 000 OR US$50

for non-Kenyans in the form of Banker’s Cheque or National bank deposit slip.

– Candidates should provide reliable and permanent mailing address with postal codes for

any future contact. Those near Nairobi may hand deliver the completed application forms

to KMTC Headquarters’ offices.

Difference between students in Regular category and Parallel/Self-sponsored category

Students in regular category have subsidized fee with optional accommodation but they are not allowed to choose a campus. On the other hand, students in parallel category have non subsidized fee, no accommodation option but are allowed to choose a campuses of their choice in the 72 campuses situated in different parts of the country depending on the courses.

KMTC Reporting Dates

In-service (up-grading and Post-basic) 1st week of September

Pre-service (Regular, Self-Sponsored Students and Parallel) 2nd week of September.

Starting of Academic Year

1st week of September

Beginning and end of Semesters/

Semesters: Two semesters with a short break in December (2 weeks) and long break in August

(one full month).

-1st Semester will run from 1st September to begining of February.

– 2nd Semester will run from beginning of March to end of July.
