In Kenya’s Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) which has now been rebranded to Competency-Based Education, Grade 10 marks the first year of Senior School (Senior Secondary), which spans Grades 10 to 12. At this stage, students begin to specialize in specific pathways based on their interests and aptitudes. The Ministry of Education has outlined three main pathways, each with its own subjects:
1. STEM Pathway (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics)
Core and optional subjects may include:
Mathematics (compulsory)
Biology
Chemistry
Physics
Computer Science
Physical Education
Life Skills Education

2. Social Sciences Pathway (Humanities and Arts)
Subjects may include:
History and Government
Geography
Religious Education (Christian, Islamic, or Hindu)
Sociology
Psychology
Literature
Performing Arts
Visual Arts
Languages (English, Kiswahili, Indigenous or Foreign)

3. Creative Arts and Sports Science Pathway
Subjects may include:
Performing Arts (Music, Dance, Drama)
Visual Arts
Physical Education and Sports
Media Studies
Fine Arts
Fashion and Design
Compulsory Core Subjects Across All Pathways
Regardless of the pathway, students are required to study:
English
Kiswahili or Kenyan Sign Language
Mathematics (depending on the pathway)
Life Skills Education
Physical Education
Subject offerings can vary slightly depending on the school’s resources and the specialization it supports.
