The only public mid-level health training institution in the health ministry, KMTC started in 1927 with four students. Today it has grown tremendously, curving a niche for itself as one of the largest medical training institution in East and Central Africa and even beyond- drawing students from Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, Sudan and Nigeria.

The courses have continuously grown from a handful to more than 50 currently, to meet the changing needs of the country’s health care system.

The introduction of new courses is in line with the College’s strategy to keep abreast with market changes and the needs of the global community.
New Courses introduced to respond to health challenges

KMTC has started a number of new courses to proactively help the Government fight against new  and emerging health challenges. The new courses are palliative care nursing, nephrology   nursing, orthopedic trauma medicine, enhanced enrolled community nursing and nurse anesthesia.
Others are health systems management (HSM) and health education and promotion.
Palliative care nursing – started to combat challenges arising from non- communicable diseases especially cancers, diabetes and hypertension.
Nephrology- aimed at supporting the national Government’s Managed Equipment Service (MES). MES is a Government-supported Initiative aimed at equipping hospitals countrywide with high- tech machines to help combat diseases such as cancer and diabetes.
Enrolled Community Nursing – a certificate course sponsored by the World Bank and Beyond Zero Trust to train nurses for the marginalized areas, especially North – Eastern, to improve maternal and child health. The course was previously being offered in three campuses but has been expanded to eight.
Nurse anesthesia – has been introduced to combat maternal and infant mortalities.
Health Systems Management – is now being offered as a higher diploma course. It seeks to equip health practitioners with leadership and management skills.
Orthopedic trauma medicine – has been started to deal with victimsof increased number of motorcycle and vehicle accidents on Kenyan roads. It will help the nation mitigate challenges posed by these accidents.

Higher diploma course in clinical medicine (mental health and psychiatry)- has been started at KMTC Mathare. It is aimed at helping the country bridge the huge gap that exists in mental health services.

Diploma in Health Education and Promotion – has been started at Nairobi campus. This course was previously offered at higher diploma level only. It now targets form four leavers and aims at equipping students with skills in prevention of diseases.

Kenya Medical Training College Admission Requirements

Kenya Medical Training College Admission Requirements. KMTC offers a wide range of courses, from certificate to diploma to higher diploma, which reflects the institution’s responsiveness to the needs of our nation.

To join KMTC to pursue a certificate course, you must have a minimum of C- with specific qualifications in cluster subjects in Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examinations. For diploma programmes, you must have attained a minimum of C with specific qualifications in cluster subjects.

Upgrading courses require that a candidate has a certificate while for higher diploma programmes, candidates must have attained a diploma course as per the following guidelines.

Course requirements
The following are the requirements for all courses offered:-

Certificate courses
Certificate courses take two years with the exception of nursing which takes two and a half years. A minimum aggregate of C- with relevant combination of other subjects is a requirement.

Diploma Courses:
KCSE mean grade of C (or equivalent) with relevant combination of other subjects such as English, Kiswahili, Biology, Biological Sciences, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Physical Sciences.

Duration
3 years except Community Health Nursing which lasts 3 ½ years.
Post Basic Diploma courses
Holders of basic diploma in relevant fields and at least a minimum of two years working experience.

Short Courses:
Individuals and groups such as corporate bodies, companies and government ministries interested in any course or courses can make a written request for arrangements to be made.

Training Categories: We have fulltime and part time trainees enrolled in various courses each year as in-service and Pre-service
Application Procedure for certificate and self sponsored

Applications:
Duly completed application forms are filled by prospective candidates for admission into Courses for each academic year for Regular or Parallel Category. The Regular category have subsidized fee with optional accommodation but no choice for Campus while the parallel category have non subsidized fee, no accommodation option but have option for Campuses in more than twenty nine (29) campuses situated in different parts of the country depending on the courses.

Procedure:
•    Prospective candidates are expected to submit a duly completed application form which can be obtained from the KMTC website, KMTC face book and KMTC campuses across the country.
•    Candidates are advised to attach legible Photostat copies of academic certificates; school leaving certificate and national identity card/birth certificate.
•    Applications must be accompanied by a non-refundable fee of KShs.1, 000 OR US$50 for non-Kenyans in the form of Banker’s Cheque or National bank deposit slip. Application fee does not guarantee admission.
•    Candidates should provide reliable and permanent mailing address with postal codes for any future contact. Those near Nairobi may hand deliver the completed application forms to KMTC Headquarters’ offices.

Kenya Medical Training College Fees Structure

There are three fee categories namely:
•    Regular
•    Parallel/In-service
•    Foreign (as detailed in the Current fees structure)

Fees structure is subject to changes from time to time
Students are advised to pay fees on annual basis to avoid interruption of training
Upon dismissal, fees are not refundable.
NB: Students are advised to make financial arrangements to cover expenses related to Practical attachment; Research etc. details are available from respective faculties upon reporting

Stationary
All stationary is the responsibility of the student.
Students are encouraged to buy their own textbooks, and specific course book lists are usually provided as an admission package to assist in purchasing books.

Medical Equipment
All special medical equipment in each course i.e. Stethoscopes etc are the responsibility of the student

KMTC Student Bursaries and Loans Program enables individuals with insufficient financial resources to pursue their studies by providing financial assistance.

HELB LOANS

1.Available for KMTC students as Afya Elimu Fund that was negotiated by KMTC and FUNZOKenya (Partner with KMTC)

2.There are two Categories: –

  • First Time Applicants – All students who have never applied for HELB LOAN at any time irrespective of the year of study
  • Subsequent Applicants – All students who have at any given time applied for HELB Loan irrespective of whether they benefitted or not

3.Process- Applied after the HELB office puts an advert specifying the category to apply

4.Applications are done on-line or as per guidelines on the advertisement

5.Application forms are downloaded later for appropriate signatories and sent to HELB Loan Office directly by students

6.A List of successful students is sent to the Bursary office for Verification by Principals (an exercise of checking whether students belong to the specified College and their Fee Balances)

7.When successfully verified, payment is done to KMTC Central collection Account and KMTC issues receipt.

8.Bursary Desk officer sends list of successful applicants and copy of receipt to Principals concerned.

9.Principals input the loan in individual student ledgers and inform them e.g. through mounting list of the students on their Notice board.

Note the Following: 

  • There is a lapse of time between the initial list of the beneficiaries and payment which comes with name of those paid for (Verification period).
  • However all students in the initial list must be paid for though amounts may vary depending on the Student fee balances forwarded to HELB office by Principal

TIME TO APLY

Once advert is out. It has deadlines and therefore any difficulties experienced should be communicated to Desk Officer both at College level or HQ and HELB office

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

All Pre-service students of KMTC are eligible provided they follow advertisement guideline Higher National Diploma Students are not eligible. However, HELB Loan is available to Public servants on training and details can be obtained from their website or KMTC Human Resource Manager – Head office.
