The college started in 1927 one year after the establishment of Pumwani Maternity Hospital.At that time,the qualification for trainees was the ability to speak Swahili.
The college has continued to train midwives for both local and international market.Up to 2006,we have been training post basic students in midwifery certificate and diploma.Since April 2007 a basic diploma course in general nursing and midwifery for form 4 leavers has been offered.

1.BASIC DIPLOMA IN KENYA REGISTERED NURSING AND MID-WIFERY
Applications are invited for a 3 years Basic Diploma course in KRN/M at Pumwani Maternity College of Nursing and Midwifery. The applicants must meet the following requirements:-
Form four level of education with a mean Grade of C Plain in KCSE or its equivalent.
C Plain or its equivalent in Biology and English or Kiswahili.
C- in any of the following subjects:- Mathematics,Physics or Chemistry Or
Holders of certificate in Nursing or Midwifery and with the above KCSE mean grade or its equivalent
Applicants should attach copies of National Identity Card and academic certificates.
2.POST BASIC KENYA REGISTERED MIDWIFERY COURSE
The applicants must meet the following requirements:-
Should have completed Kenya Registered Nurse (KRN) training and must be registered by the Nursing Council of Kenya.
Form four level of education with a mean Grade of C Plain in KCSE or its equivalent.
C Plain or its equivalent in Biology and English or Kiswahili
C- in any one of the following subjects :- Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry
Have a practicing license from the Nursing Council of Kenya
Applicants should attach copies of National Identification Card and academic and professional certificates The course will take 1 year, leading to award of Diploma in Midwifery.
3. POST BASIC KENYA ENROLLED MIDWIFERY COURSE
The applicants must meet the following requirements:-
Should have completed Kenya Enrolled Nurse(KEN) training and must be registered by the Nursing Council of Kenya
Form four level of education with a mean Grade of C- in KCSE or its equivalent
C Plain or its equivalent in Biology and English or Kiswahili
D+ in any one of the following subjects:- Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry
Have a practicing license from the Nursing Council of Kenya
Applicants should attach copies of National Identification Card, academic and professional certificates
The course will take 1 year leading to award of Certificate in Midwifery.
4.SHORT COURSES-MONTHLY IN-TAKE:
Comprehensive Reproductive health training 6 months for nurses and clinical officers already practicing and have a license at …, July in-take.
HIV testing and counseling for all health care workers (NASCOP accredited).3 weeks training.Monthly in-take at KShs.20,000/-
Clinical training skills.
Voluntary male medical circumcision for 3 weeks for nurses and clinical officers
